The House Without a Master
What becomes of obedience when there is no authority, and of identity when memory cannot establish whose life one has lived?
Dr Émilie Varenne receives an invitation that contains a correction to mathematics she has shared with nobody. In the house that awaits her, rooms are familiar before they have been entered, histories remain mutually incompatible, and the language of permission becomes progressively less useful.
No one will tell her who governs the house. More disturbing still, the possibility that nobody does is taken perfectly seriously.
